Bitfinex’s Chief Technology Officer, Paolo Ardoino, disclosed that an assailant tried to exploit the cryptocurrency exchange using XRP’s partial payments feature, but the attempt was unsuccessful.

The reported transaction of approximately $15 billion XRP from an unidentified wallet to Bitfinex on January 14 turned out to be part of a failed “partial payments exploit” endeavor, as revealed by Bitfinex’s CTO, Paolo Ardoino. The incident was initially brought to attention by blockchain tracking account Whale Alert (formerly on Twitter), which claimed to detect a transfer of 25.6 billion XRP—nearly half of XRP’s circulating supply—from an unknown wallet to Bitfinex.

However, Whale Alert later retracted the post, stating that there was an issue with accurately interpreting the Ripple node response, leading to a few erroneous posts.
