Mistral AI, a French startup, has entered the competitive AI landscape with the launch of its proprietary large language model (LLM), Mistral Large. According to the company’s announcement on Feb. 26, Mistral Large showcased impressive performance in multitask language understanding tests, surpassing several notable LLMs, except for GPT-4. The model also demonstrated strong capabilities in various math and coding evaluations.

Notably, Mistral Large’s performance comparison did not include newer entrants such as xAI’s Grok and Google’s Gemini Ultra, both released in November and early February, respectively. Cointelegraph sought comments from Mistral AI regarding this omission. Guillaume Lample, founder and chief scientist at Mistral AI, asserted that Mistral Large is “vastly superior” to the company’s earlier models. In addition to the new LLM, Mistral AI introduced “Le Chat,” an AI chat interface built on top of its models, similar to ChatGPT’s structure based on GPT-3.5 and GPT-4.

Highlighting a strategic partnership, Mistral AI revealed collaboration with Microsoft, making Mistral Large accessible on Azure AI Studio and Azure Machine Learning. Securing $487 million in funding in December from major backers including Nvidia, Salesforce, and Andreessen Horowitz, Mistral AI emphasized Mistral Large’s extensive language capabilities, encompassing over 20,000 words in English and fluency in French, Spanish, German, and Italian.
